Viva La Margarita

The margarita is known as the most famous tequila cocktail, and for good reason. The intense lime flavour makes the drink quite sour and yet very refreshing, while the strength of the tequila really packs a punch. The simplicity of the recipe also leaves it open to a multitude of tasty variations making it great for any occasion. The margarita is a perfect drink to sip on while relaxing by the pool, to accompany a spicy meal, or to enjoy while socializing at the bar with friends.

The Traditional Margarita

2 oz tequila blanco (100% agave)
1 oz Triple Sec or Cointreau
1 oz of lime juice (we always recommend juicing your own limes)
1 oz simple syrup (optional, if a sweeter taste is desired)
Kosher salt

Rim a margarita or rocks glass with a lime wedge and coat with Kosher salt. Add ice, and place the glass to the side. Add the remaining ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake vigorously, unlocking all the flavours and breaking up the ice, until the drink is cold. Strain into the glass and garnish with a lime wedge.

Spice Up Your Life with the Spicy Margarita

2 oz tequila blanco (100% agave)
1 oz Triple Sec or Cointreau
1 oz of lime juice
¼ tsp red pepper flakes
Pinch cayenne pepper
Kosher salt
Jalapeño pepper

Rim a margarita or rocks glass with a lime wedge and coat with Kosher salt (or a mixture of other spices). Add ice, and place the glass to the side. Into a shaker, add the pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and lime juice and muddle (for about 30 seconds). Add ice and the remaining ingredients into the shaker and shake vigorously, unlocking all the flavours and breaking up the ice, until the drink is cold. Strain into the glass, and garnish with a jalapeño pepper.

The Frozen Margarita

2 oz tequila blanco (100% agave)
1 oz Triple Sec or Cointreau
1 oz of lime juice
1 oz simple syrup (optional, if a sweeter taste is desired)
1 cup of crushed ice
Kosher salt

Rim a margarita or martini glass with a lime wedge and coat with Kosher salt. Throw everything else into a blender and go to town. Pour the drink into the glass and garnish with a wedge of lime. Walk over to your pool (or a neighbour’s pool while they’re away… Be careful!) and enjoy.

Other Delicious Variations

Try replacing the lime juice with other juices. For example, orange or tangerine juice will give you a much sweeter taste. You could also try substituting the Triple Sec with other liqueurs. Using Blue Curaçao, for example, will yield a “blue margarita”. Not only does this drink taste awesome, it’s also blue (double awesome)!
