School’s in, so it’s time to get started on your freshman fifteen in earnest with the sugary Alabama Slammer, a frat house favourite. Impress your new friends at frosh week when you line it up in shot glasses, or pour yourself a tall one to wind down after a long day of classes.
Not a cocktail you may have expected to find on the discerning pages of FMMS, the Alabama Slammer is a college staple that works well when you’re in the mood for something decidedly sweet.
As for its history, there really isn’t much to tell! It doesn’t show up in many classic cocktail books and the best guess seems to peg the height of its popularity to the college crown of the 1980’s. Frankly, you’re probably just looking for something to make for your dorm party tonight and have already skipped over this paragraph to the recipe. Fine. I guess I can’t blame you. Without further ado…
¾ oz Sloe gin
¾ oz Southern Comfort
¾ oz Amaretto
Add the Sloe gin, Southern Comfort, and Amaretto to a stirring glass with ice, and stir well. Strain into an ice filled collins glass and top with orange juice. Garnish with Maraschino cherry.
If it’s time for shots, just use equal proportions of each ingredient, stir well with ice, and strain it into your shot glasses. I recommend playing this while you prep it:
Some recipes call for a bit of grenadine, but do your blood-sugar levels a favour and forget it. This drink is definitely sweet enough without it, so beware the hangover!
