Classic: Blue Moon

I’ve recently admitted to an addiction. The guys have been telling me as much for the past several weeks, but I refused to believe them. It’s often the only thing I crave and it’s only in the last little while that I’ve realized how much of a hold it’s had on me.

The culprit: crème de violette.

This intoxicating liqueur has only recently been made available here in Ontario. For the longest time, it was extremely hard to come by in Canada. It was only after several requests from Ontarians to the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) that the store decided to stock it. After such a long wait, I rushed to LCBO the second I heard the news and wasted no time experimenting.

For the uninitiated, crème de violette is a liqueur that’s infused with violet flowers. It comes in a brandy or neutral spirit base and has a strong floral and sweet aroma. Given how much I love elderflower liqueur, my addiction should really come as no surprise to anyone.

One of its most popular uses is in the Aviation Cocktail, but I most recently used it in my very own Lilac Spring with delicious results.

In this post, however, I wanted to highlight the liqueur; front and centre. The Blue Moon is a classic crème de violette cocktail that is beautiful to look at, but also brings forward the liqueur in a strong, yet balanced way.



2 oz gin
½ oz Gifford’s Crème de Violette
½ oz lemon juice
Lavender sprig for garnish

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a lavender sprig.


You don’t need a lot of the violette as it has a potent flavour. The gin grounds the cocktail while the tart lemon juice balances the sweetness nicely.

If you really despise floral flavours, then this might not be for you. But if you like sweet and appreciate liqueurs like elderflower, then it should be right up your alley.
