As the weather cools and the nights get longer, we here at FMMS start switching away from the refreshing floral cocktails like the Lavender Collins and our very own “Le Violet” (sorry Mano, it might be time to put away that crème de violette…) to something stronger and warmer. In my humble opinion, one of the best such drinks is the Old Fashioned.
Today’s post is about my favourite variation of this classic; the Cinnamon Old Fashioned.
2 oz rye or bourbon
⅓ oz cinnamon syrup
¼ oz cointreau (optional)
2 dashes orange bitters
Orange slice and a cinnamon stick for garnish
Add ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled. Strain into a short glass over a large cube of ice. Add the orange slice and cinnamon stick as a garnish.
Making cinnamon syrup is pretty straightforward and follows the same general guidelines as any syrup.
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
4 cinnamon sticks
Mix the sugar and water in a small saucepan on medium-high heat. As the water heats up, stir to dissolve the sugar. At the first sign of a boil, reduce heat and add the cinnamon sticks, letting it simmer for 10 minutes. Let the syrup sit overnight before removing the cinnamon sticks.
The end result is a heavy cinnamon profile that sweetens the overall drink, but is just as strong as the original. It’s definitely a great choice if you’re in the mood for a holiday cocktail that will put some hair on your chest.
And just like our very own Walnut Manhattan, it’s a great option to serve your guests that are in the mood for a holiday cocktail, but are over egg nog.
The only thing it doesn’t have going for it is that it’s not overwhelmingly purple. Sorry again, Mano.
