Sweet Nero

Spring is in full swing (I’m a rhymer) and for us that means cocktails with seasonal fruit ingredients.

This beauty was created by fellow FMMS’er Sebastian Ortega and highlights Chambord, front and centre. To the uninitiated, Chambord is a raspberry liqueur with notes of raspberries, vanilla, citrus, honey, and cognac, and named after the French province of the same name.

Sebastian’s inspiration for this drink came from the ingredients in his garden. Combining raspberry and citrus flavours gave him the idea to try a twist on Italian soda cocktails and the result is an honest-to-goodness beautiful and refreshing cocktail.


1 ½ oz Chambord
½ oz gin
¾ oz Cointreau
¾ oz lemon juice
Club soda

Add all ingredients except for the club soda into a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass and top with club soda. Garnish with two blackberries and a sprig of mint.

When combined, the ingredients produce a beautiful light red colour. It’s definitely a raspberry-forward cocktail, but not overly so. Because of the complexity of the Chambord, you also get those vanilla and honey notes, while the addition of lemon juice and club soda help balance the drink. The raspberries and mint add to the aroma and make it a perfect summer cocktail for tending the garden.

Not only do we find it beautiful, but so do others. In fact, it was featured in the premier issue of Ottawa Luxe Magazine! We were thrilled to share this seasonal recipe with our hometown and highlight unique ingredients at the same time.
