July 1st is Canada Day. It’s a day when us polite Canadians come together and celebrate our country from coast-to-coast-to-coast. This year is especially significant as it marks the country’s 150th anniversary.
We wanted to pay our tribute in the best way know how – with a cocktail!
Here’s our unapologetic tribute to our home and native land.
1 ½ oz Northern Harvest Crown Royal Rye
1 ½ oz Val Ambré Maple Sap liqueur
1 generous bar spoon of maple syrup
3 dashes cranberry bitters
1 wedge of a beaver tail
1 strip of candied bacon
In an ice-filled mixing glass, add all of the ingredients (except the beavertail and bacon, obviously…sorry), and stir well. Strain into a rocks glass with a single large ice cube. Garnish with a beaver tail wedge and candied bacon strip.
The result is a twist on a classic Manhattan, but with as many Canadian or Canadian-themed ingredients as possible. Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye is a smooth, Manitoba distilled, rye whisky that offers a solid base, with the added distinction of winning best whiskey in the world 2016. The maple sap liqueur is produced by Le Domaine Acer, a sugar bush in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec with a wonderful maple flavour that provides a great alternative to sweet vermouth.
Of course, our tribute wouldn’t be complete without Canadian maple syrup. It adds unique sweetness and flavour, while the cranberry bitters rounds everything out and adds great colour. As for the garnishes, they were our way of saying, “We’re Canadian and we’re proud! If that’s okay with you.”
Here’s wishing everyone a Happy Canada Day and we apologize (but not really) for our excessive tribute.
