Pear in Spirit

The humble pear – a fruit with a storied history. Well, maybe not ‘storied’, but it’s often grouped together in fruit baskets and platters with its cooler, more popular cousin, the apple. But how about when it comes to cocktails? Home bartenders (like us) could be forgiven for not considering pears in our recipes, but they hold a lot of flavour potential.

So when our good friend and former fellow blogger Sebastian showed us his recently purchased bottle of St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur, we were all intrigued. Pear and spice? Sold!

With a bottle of Calvados Apple Brandy at our disposal, Sebastian started tinkering with some amaro and attempted to blend everything together. We taste-tested it a couple times to get the proportions right and settled on the recipe below.

I only sort of helped.


1 ½ oz Calvados Apple Brandy
¾ oz St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur
½ oz amaro
Garnish with pear slice and cherry

Add all ingredients to an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir well and strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with pear slice and cherry.

The pear liqueur is delicious and really shines through. The subtle spice adds a wonderful complexity and pairs (ha!) really nicely with the apple brandy. The amaro adds a nice bittersweet component and the result is a punchy cocktail that’s perfect for the fall season.

I’ve always found pears to be pretty subtle in terms of flavour, but adding it into a cocktail opens the door to loads of possibilities. The complexity it brought to this drink really opened my eyes. So much so in fact, that this recipe has become one of my favourites on this site.

At your next party, replace the fruit platter with a bunch of these and your guests will thank you. In fact, they may even be pearsuaded to come back.
