Bourbon Detox

A unique twist on a bourbon sour, this cocktail probably won’t actually help you detox, but it’s nice to pretend sometimes.

The folks at the new Lexington Smokehouse & Bar in Ottawa asked for our help to develop some cocktails to complement their unique menu, and we’re highlighting a few of our favourites on the site.

The Bourbon Detox will immediately strike you visually. The white froth contrasted with the the black activated charcoal really pops. Naturally, the charcoal is also where the amazing detoxifying properties come in. (Editor’s note: These trace amounts of charcoal will actually not have any effect on your health, their beauty may make you irrationally happy. Please don’t sue us.)

1 oz Bourbon
1 oz Amaretto
¾ Simple Syrup
¾ Lemon Juice
Egg White
2 dashes walnut bitters
Garnish: Activated charcoal

Add all ingredients to a shaker and dry shake. Add ice to the shaker and shake well again. Double strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a few sprinkles of activated charcoal.

What you’ll end up with is a nuttier and richer version of a bourbon sour that will perfectly whet your appetite for some barbecue. (As a bonus, if you can get your hands on some Trader Vic’s Macadamia Nut Liqueur, try subbing it in for the Amaretto for a real treat.)

Did we mention that Lexington is now open and they happen to have amazing barbecue and fantastic cocktails? Modesty is overrated. Check them out at or on Instagram @lexingtonottawa.
