BSS Original: Sweet Rum-ance

When we decided to commemorate Valentine’s Day this year, we didn’t want to focus strictly on one cocktail. Because everyone’s taste is different, we decided to come up with three variations: a Collins cocktail (Kiss from a Rose), a sour (this recipe), and a stiff rocks drink (coming soon).

With this in mind, we knew that the cocktail we’re highlighting today would likely be the most ‘Valentine-y’ looking of the three. An egg white cocktail always looks sophisticated and gives you the opportunity to create something truly beautiful.

As with the ‘Kiss from a Rose’, this one also highlights strawberries, but includes some Amarula Cream Liqueur in the mix. If you’re unfamiliar with Amarula, it’s a cream liqueur from South Africa made with sugar, cream, and fruit from the African marula tree. It’s a rich liqueur with notes of toffee, vanilla, and marula fruit.

It pairs great with rum, so we chose that as the base spirit. We infused the rum with some vanilla bean to give it a more seasonal flavour and too make it feel like a sweet dessert.

Recipe

1 ½ oz vanilla-infused Flor de Cana White Rum
½ oz Amarula Cream Liqueur
1 oz strawberry syrup
1 egg white
2 dashes cherry bitters
Garnish: cherry bitters & strawberries

In a shaker, add ingredients without ice and dry shake. Add ice and shake again. Double-strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with cherry bitters and strawberries.

Vanilla-Infused Rum

2 vanilla sticks
1 bottle white rum (750ml)

Add vanilla sticks to bottle and let sit for 2-3 days. Serve as desired.

The result is a light, creamy, and sweet cocktail that tastes like a Valentine dessert. The vanilla comes through from the rum and Amarula, while the strawberry syrup gives it a nice sweet kick.

It’s a pretty great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and a perfect complement to your romantic evening.
