Grapefruit and Chill

Ah August – the Sunday of summer. But before we say goodbye to summer 2019 and start spiraling into premature winter blues, we need to chill, craft a Spritz cocktail, and make the best of the remaining sunny days ahead. That said, summer is still alive and well and so should your spritz game. Nothing compliments sunshine better than a delicious Aperol Spritz splashed into a sexy tall glass.

It’s safe to say that the Aperol Spritz is the reigning champ in the summer spritz game and rightfully so. It’s easy to make, refreshing, and super approachable where even the most novice drinkers will indulge in its brightly coloured majesty.

I, for one, have enjoyed many summer days and nights sipping on one. It’s for this reason I wanted to express my appreciation for it and give back by crafting a respectable variation that’s just as refreshing and further expands its reach by working in gin and grapefruit.

1 ½ oz gin
1 oz Aperol
¾ oz Giffard Crème de Pamplemousse
¾ oz grapefruit juice
Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic water

Shake all the ingredients except the tonic water in an ice-filled shaker and strain into a Collins glass. Top with Tonic and garnish with a mint sprig and grapefruit peel.

The addition of the grapefruit juice and liqueur compliment the bittersweet orange of the Aperol and further lengthen the enjoyable bitter notes on the palate. The gin balances everything by slightly tapering down the sweetness and introducing a whisper of spiciness from the higher ABV. Top it all off with some tonic water and there you have it: a refreshing, bitter- forward intake of summer that will keep you on summer chill mode for as long as you need.

To conclude, the Grapefruit and Chill is a friendly reminder that summer is still upon us. So just chill and please keep on spritzing. Ch(ill)eers!

I’m hilarious.
